Works by Amanda Gorman from her book Call Us What We Carry in Ukrainian Translation to be created as a Poetic Performance by the Les Kurbas Theatre in Lviv Ukraine

The Les Kurbas Theatre is pleased to announce a multi-faceted theatrical project in conjunction with the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine based on the works of the modern American poet Amanda Gorman. The project aims to create a multicultural, educational, and artistic union that will bring together American and Ukrainian worlds into a powerful artistic collaboration.
Within the framework of the project, poetry selected from Gorman’s book Call Us What We Carry will be realized through the processes of creating an original translation of the poems, conducting theatrical workshops based on the literature, and result in the presentation of a performance that will harmonize the Les Kurbas Theatre’s aesthetic together with the articulate creativity of Gorman’s poetic voice.
Over the course of the project, in accordance with the Les Kurbas Theatre’s unique methodology for exploring literature, the theatre will delve into the artistic depths of the themes, structures and movement of Gorman’s highly stylized poetry, as well as into their American - Ukrainian cultural relevance. Despite our different histories, the trials (and joys) of our different cultures have much in common; we have lived through much, survive, and thrive. Gorman’s poetry exudes resilience and light, even in the darkest of hours.
By the express wishes of Amanda Gorman, who has generously provided the rights to perform her texts in Ukraine, part of the proceeds from these performances will be donated to our military hospitals.
The premiere of the performance is scheduled for March in 2025.
The project is implemented with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine under the Program Small Grants "Strengthening Ukrainian Cultural Institutions through Ukrainian-American Cooperation in the Field of Performing Arts".
