The writer and philosopher, a participant in the French Revolution, Marquis de Sade is infamous for his nihilistic views on morality and sexual relations with violence. He spent a good part of his life in prison (including being charged with sodomy). It was his name that gave the name to the concept of sadism. But the play does not feature the marquis, but the marquess - Rene de Sade, who for nineteen years sought to release her husband from prison, and during this time, revisiting the established notions of virtue, holiness, vice, made the difficult path to herself. Struggling with the influence of the environment, she seeks her own attitude to the ideas of the Marquis de Sade. Is cruelty an integral part of human nature, and dark desires control its actions? Is it possible to accept that sin and redundancy lead to purification and liberation?
